Outdoor Education – A Point of Difference

Westland High School’s four Outdoor Education classes all focus on a different school value each term. These are discussed and practiced through a variety of outdoor contexts.

  • Term 1 Kaitiakitanga – Demonstrating guardianship of ourselves, each other and the environment
  • Term 2 Manākitanga – Supporting and building up our classmates through challenging situations
  • Term 3 Rangatiratanga – Showing leadership and taking control of outdoor activities
  • Term 4 Whanaungatanga – Developing and celebrating connections with all members of the class

Year 13 

  • White water kayaking on class 2
  • Crossing rivers and bush survival skills
  • Demonstrate knowledge of weather processes and conditions
  • Low angled mountaineering skills
  • Demonstrate sea kayaking skills
  • Plan, carry out and evaluate a local mahinga kai activity

Year 12 

  • Kayaking skills on moving water
  • Demonstrate knowledge of how personal contributions influence a group
  • Overnight tramping, weather interpretation and bush survival skills
  • Preparing for outdoor activities
  • Snow shelters and basic mountain movement skills
  • Abseiling and basic rock climbing

Year 11

  • Kayaking on flat water
  • Demonstrate personal awareness and positive behavior in the outdoors
  • Tramping and camping skills
  • Demonstrate knowledge of weather, maps and the New Zealand land safety code
  • Mountain biking on grade 1 & 2
  • Preparing for an outdoor activity
  • Develop basic rock climbing skills

Year 9 and 10 

  • Team development and communication skills
  • Water safety in a variety of settings
  • Overnight water based journey
  • Personal awareness and positive actions in a group setting
  • Demonstrate tramping skills on the Westcoast.
  • River crossing and survival skills

There are approximately 10 longer, overnight trips

The following dates are proposed dates for 2018 as an example of the schedule available.  Due to the nature of weather we need to have a degree of flexibility around these dates and times.
