Year 13 Physical Education Field Trip
The Year 13 PE class organised a field trip as part of their assessment on risk managment (Achievement standard 91504 - Analyse issues in safety management for outdoor activity to devise safety management strategies) and invited the international students along for the adventure.
The assessment looks at how risk is managed by an adventure tourism business and also how you manage your own risk in the outdoors.
On day one, we visited Adrenaline Forest which is a high ropes course in Spencer Park, Christchurch. The course has six course levels with different challenges at each level including flying foxes, ladders, swing bridges, tight ropes, and nets.
Adrenalin Forest is a very popular activity for groups such as our Year 13 students who love the challenge, adrenalin and the independence of creating their own aerial adventure. The students really enjoy the fact that they are trained in what they need to do and how to do it safely, then go off and have the independence to climb through the trees at whatever level they like.
On day two, we navigated our way through Cave Stream near Broken River which is a 594 metre cave with a cold stream running through it. The students had completed a risk assessment and we were well prepared with all of the equipment required to safely enjoy the adventure.
This practical experience is extremely valuable for the students who are lucky enough to get outside the classroom and see how things work in the real world. It was also a fabulous opportunity for our international students to see more of what New Zealand and Westland High School has to offer.
