Sports update

It's been a busy month since our last Sports event update. Read on to see what the students and staff have been engaged in recently.

West Coast Secondary School Athletics

Wow, we are so excited to share with you that we had an awesome time at the West Coast championships, where we saw many talented athletes from Westland High School competing. The day was filled with lots of fun and energy, and to our delight, we didn't have any rain to spoil the event. A big shoutout to Sports Canterbury for putting up a fantastic show that left the kids overjoyed.

Mainland futsal comp

We recently participated in our first-ever Year 9 and 10 mainland futsal competition! It was an amazing experience for our team to compete against other well-trained teams. Though we have to admit, the physical play of the Christchurch team was a bit much for us to handle.  Nevertheless, we learned a lot from each game and had a blast overall! We'd like to give a huge shoutout to our parents for their unwavering support and for providing us with such delicious meals during our trip. Thank you so much!

WCSS 3X3 Basketball

It was an day watching our school's young basketball players compete in the West Coast Secondary School 3x3 Basketball competition! The coast was filled with so many talented  players, and it was awesome to see our school represented by both a boys' and a girls' team.

Our boys' team made it all the way to the final, and even though they lost by just one point, we're so proud of their outstanding achievement! Our girls' team also played an awesome game, and it was fantastic to see how supportive and encouraging everyone was, learning and growing together throughout the day.

We want to give a huge shoutout to Mel Packham, who coached and refereed both the girl's and boy's basketball teams in the tournament. And of course, a big thank you to Maddy for organising and running such an amazing event. What a great day it was for everyone!

SISS 3X3 Basketball

Our Senior girl's basketball team went to the South Island Secondary School 3x3 basketball tournament in Ashburton. This was the first time we had participated in this tournament and it was a great exposure for our school girls basketball team. In the tournament, we played 9 games that helped us gain valuable experience in basketball while playing against the best schools in the South Island.

Our team was made up of Freya Craig, Rebekah Provis, Jesse Smith, Ngaio Fleming, and Jorja Kyle. While we had a bit of a challenging start with the first two games, we managed to win the last game of the day. On day two, our school team faced some good basketball teams from Christchurch, which proved to be a great learning curve for us.

Overall, we are happy to have participated in the tournament and grateful for the opportunity to play some awesome basketball developing our skill set further. We would like to thank the parents for supporting our team with their delicious food and fruits, and also our coach and manager Mel Packham for looking after the team.

SISS Korfball

We're so thrilled about the amazing performance of our Westland High School Senior A Korfball team at the South Island Secondary School Korfball tournament!

The first day of the tournament was no joke, as we faced some of the toughest competition out there. But our amazing team pulled through and showed some real grit and determination!

On the second day, the team played some serious ball in the quarterfinals for places 9th to 16th at the SISS Korfball championships, winning the quarterfinals 10-8 against Middleton Grange. Although we lost to St Margaret's/Christ College in the semifinals, we kept our heads held high and went on to win the play 11th and 12th playoff against Kaiapoi 8-6!

We couldn't be more proud of our team for putting up such a fantastic show against some of the best teams on the South Island. You guys are simply amazing!

We also want to take a moment to thank our wonderful ex-students/korfers who came to support us and gave us the boost we needed to keep going! Your positive vibes mean the world to us!

Lastly, a big shoutout to our amazing Coach Sarah Bateup, and Manager Kelly Kyle for their outstanding leadership and support throughout the tournament. You guys are the real MVPs!

WCPS Hockey Festival

At the Primary school hockey festival, there were190 kids from 13 schools that came together to form 22 teams and play 60 exciting games, scoring a total of 185 goals. A massive event!

In our team, we had some players who were new to hockey, but they did a fantastic job and gained some invaluable experience. We started the day with a couple of draws that helped us build confidence and a positive attitude. The next round was more challenging, but we played well against Paroa school and only let in a single goal at the very end. We finished the tournament with a well-deserved win that we're all proud of!

Special credits go to Jordyn, Cameron, and Isaac, our secondary school umpires, who put in a lot of effort alongside our other fill-in umpires. And a massive thank you to Jack O'Connor and Sports Canterbury for supporting this event and making it possible. It was a fantastic day of hockey, and we can't wait for the next one!

West Coast Swimming Champs

Our swimmers had an amazing time at the West Coast swimming champs! They had to travel all the way to Westport for the competition, but they didn't let that dampen their spirits.

We had nine talented students representing our school, and they truly gave their all in each race. We had a great time watching all the excitement and cheering on our team. It was heartwarming to see such a display of sportsmanship and dedication. We also want to thank all the wonderful parents who volunteered their time to act as timekeepers and ensure the event ran smoothly. Thank you for making this day a huge success!

Canterbury Swimming Champs Yr 7 & 8

Congratulations to Ben Provis, Renny Jones, and Lucas Smith for qualifying for the Canterbury swimming champs on the 27th of March. We wish you all the best of luck!

Top Teams Challenge

Yesterday's Top Teams event was full of laughter, adventure, and team-building activities. We had ten teams that were mostly made up of students from years 7 and 8. Each team consisted of 6 to 7 students who got to experience twelve different activities throughout the day. These activities ranged from water challenges to memory games, and everything in between. And the winners of the day were the incredible Toes team!We couldn't have done it without the help of our amazing students who stepped up to run the event. A huge thank you to Renae and the Sports Canterbury team for putting together this fantastic activity that brought so much joy and excitement for everyone involved.
