Sports update
We've had a number of sporting events across the motu this past month.
Hockey Exchange Programme Nelson
A Memorable Hockey Exchange: West Coast Girls' Team in Nelson. West Coast combined school girls' hockey team on their trip to Nelson. It was such an unforgettable journey filled with exciting challenges, learning opportunities, and great camaraderie.
The trip was made possible by the incredible efforts of Emma Sorensen Brown, the Sports Development Advisor at Sports Tasman. They made sure the trip was about more than just the matches, weaving rich experiences into the fabric of the exchange.
On the first day, the team had a spirited match against Nelson College of Girls, and even though the final score didn't go their way, they emerged with valuable lessons.
They also had the amazing opportunity to learn from two hockey stars, Brett Butcher and Anita Punt, which was truly inspiring.
The next day, the team faced two back-to-back games, and their hard work paid off with a fantastic 4-0 victory against Waimea College. Even though they fell short against Nayland College, they gave it their all.
Throughout the trip, the support and guidance from Emma, Anita Punt, and Brett Butcher were instrumental in shaping the team's journey. It was not just a memorable exchange, but also a platform for growth and development for each player. As the team bid farewell to Nelson, they carried with them not just the memories of exhilarating matches, but also the invaluable lessons learned, friendships forged, and the unwavering spirit of sportsmanship that defines the essence of the game.

Roller Skating in school
Roller skating isn't just a recreational activity; it's a dynamic way to promote health, social interaction, and fun among students. At Westland High School, during lunchtime on every Friday, Coach Aroha has introduced an innovative roller skating program that's turning heads and wheels alike.
The benefits of roller skating extend far beyond mere recreation. It's an excellent cardiovascular workout, strengthening muscles and improving balance and coordination. "Roller skating engages multiple muscle groups, including the core, legs, and arms," Coach Aroha noted. "It's a fantastic way to stay active while having a blast."
The program has received overwhelmingly positive feedback from students
For Coach Aroha, witnessing the program's impact is immensely rewarding. "I've seen students gain confidence, improve their fitness levels, and form lasting connections," he said. "That's what it's all about – empowering young people to lead healthier, more fulfilling lives."
A massive thank you to coach Aroha for donating time to us in supporting our roller skating program.
