2024 Edogawa Youth Wing visit

We were thrilled to welcome our friends from Edogawa, Tokyo, Japan.

Again, the Edogawa Youth Wing visit was a huge success! On the 30th August we welcomed 20 students and two leaders from Edogawa City to our school. This programme has been running for 22 years and each year (excluding the pandemic years) a group has visited Westland High School to experience our way of life. Westland High School students have also had the opportunity to visit Edogawa in past years.

Each year Ms Annemarie Greig organises a programme filled with cultural and educational activities. The students are also able to interact on a personal level with our students here at Westland High School through our international student buddy programme. Each Edogawa student is matched with Westland High School student who gives them a tour of the school and spends each morning break and lunchtime with them sharing information about each other's culture - true cultural exchange.

During their time in Westland the students visited the Pancake rocks, Truman beach, Rewanui Animal Park, Hokitika Volunteer Fire Brigade, St Mary's Primary School and had a full day of Maori cultural activities. The students also spent time in classes at school including, drama, ESOL (English for Speakers of Other Languages), physical education and sharing origami with our juniour students.

We always like to take the opportunity to thank our hosts, without whom we could not run the programme. It is a wonderful experience welcoming a student into your home and we appreciate your kindness.
