SADD (Students Against Dangerous Driving) workshop

Some of the Senior Students attended a workshop held by the SADD organisation to learn about road safety.

Some of our senior students attended a Kaitiaki o Ara/SADD (Students Against Dangerous Driving) supported by FENZ (Fire and Emergency New Zealand), NZ Police and Drive Safe West Coast Road Safety Coordinator.

SADD is a charity committed to reducing risk on New Zealand roads by empowering young people to make safer and better choices on the road.

The Westland High School SADD workshop involved videos and slides about activities and campaigns. Also show casing what other SADD groups around the country are doing at their school to encourage peer to peer mentoring about road safety. Opportunities for leadership, Duke of Edinburgh Credits and volunteering opportunities were discussed.

Students met and worked with community partners on discussions about what they noticed in their community around road safety.

Points brought up included people carrying passengers on restricted licences, riding bikes without helmets, vehicles without warrants or registrations and the difficulties booking in for licence testing.

Students engaged in a believe it or not road safety activity and then went outside to look over a Fire Truck and Police Car with emergency personnel.

SADD’s annual conference is coming up in Dunedin 13 – 15 April and students are encouraged to think about attending. Some scholarships are available though the SADD organisation. If you would like to attend then please talk to Mr Brailsford.

It is hoped some interested students at Westland High School will contact SADD Programme Delivery Lead Anne-Marie Robinson to set up a SADD group at the school.
