Science Fair

The Westland High School Science Fair team performed outstandingly at the science fair.

On Friday 28 July, Greymouth High School hosted the West Coast Science Fair. The quality of the entries this year was outstanding. Westland High School only had one entry this year, “Elephant Toothpaste Toy” by Finnian O’Malley and Kiara Goodmanson. They won second prize in their category, much to the delight of their parents and Mr Nicoll.

Finnian and Kiara had investigated whether or not a toy could be made using an “Elephant Toothpaste” reaction they found online. While they had great success with the experiment, they found that the chemicals were too toxic at the concentrations they used to be suitable for a children’s toy. This goes to show that, even when the result looks like a “fail”, it can still be a successful investigation.

Finnian and Kiara are really looking forward to doing a new project next year to enter in the 2024 Science Fair in Westport. It would be great to see some more keen scientists join us at Science Club in Term One next year to work on an equally exciting Science Fair project.
