South Island Show Jumping Champs

Three students from Westland High School made the Greymouth team to compete.

Mid-January saw the South Island Show Jumping Champs hosted in some serious heat in Canterbury. Three students from Westland High School made the Greymouth team, Hugo Anderson rode as an intermediate meaning his jumps were at least 95cm high and some 95cm wide, and Estella Turnbull and Jessie Smith rode as juniors with their jumps starting at 85cm.

A two day hotly contested event saw some great riding and loads of fun while camping onsite, including a mud slide for the brave one night. Each class had around 70 riders so any placings were hard fought and needed some great displays of skill and speed.

Hugo surpassed expectations with 3 clear rounds and gathered valuable points for the team. Estella started superbly, winning the 2 phase event, then on day 2 picked up 4th place in the accumulator and 2nd in the instant jump off class. Jessie was on form on day 2 as well, getting 2nd in the accumulator class and 1st in the instant jump off class.

A big thanks to Greymouth coach Penny Jones for coaching the team to 4th out of 35 teams.
