Update from the Sports department

We've had a number of fantastic sporting achievements and events take place over the last two months.

Canterbury Secondary School Cross Country - 1st June
We are so happy to hear that Harlyn Cousins was selected to participate in the Canterbury cross country! It sounds like he had an incredible time and gained a lot from the experience. Let's hope this sets him up for a fantastic year ahead.

Year 7 and 8 10 aside Rugby - 6th June
What a day it was for Westland High School in the 10 aside rugby! We learned a lot and made progress throughout the tournament, and we're thrilled to say that we were the runners-up. It's always great to see players stepping up and leading their teams to success, and we're incredibly proud of our team. A big shout out to West Coast Rugby for putting on such an amazing festival and managing it so well!

Year 7 and 8 Rugby League Festival - 28th June
We just wrapped up another rugby festival and it was definitely a unique experience. The format was completely different from what we are used to playing, but it was still a lot of fun. It was great to see some of our teammates trying rugby for the first time and enjoying themselves out on the field with their friends. A big thank you goes out to Emily Berry for putting together such an awesome one-day festival.

West Coast Secondary School Open Football - 27th June
Our school participated in a football tournament. The girls had three teams and they played two games against each other. It was a lot of football for both our teams and the final match against South Westland Area School was a nail-biting one, which unfortunately resulted in a loss for us in the penalties. However, both teams displayed incredible talent on the pitch. On the other hand, in the boys' grades, we had a total of six teams. It was great to see the awesome teamwork and camaraderie as some players were playing football for the first time. It was an amazing experience for all of us!

A special thanks to Deb from Karamea School for organising this awesome tournament and providing such a memorable experience for our team. We wanted to take a moment to express our gratitude for the wonderful support our community have shown us. It's truly a blessing to have parents who are always there for us. We especially want to thank those who provided us with delicious meals during our recent football trip. Your generosity made a huge difference and we appreciate it more than words can express.

We also want to give a special shoutout to Erena Johnston and Lynda Nolan for their amazing work as team managers. Their dedication and hard work helped to make our trip a great success. We couldn't have done it without them!

South Island Secondary School Year 9 and 10 Netball - 2nd - 5th July
Playing in the SISS Junior netball tournament was quite an experience for the team! They had 8 games in just 3 days against some really strong schools. The best part was finishing 15th out of 32 teams in the competition - a fantastic achievement! They ended the competition with a bang, winning their final against Verdon College. They had earlier lost to them by just 1 point. Thanks to their coach Stacey Craig, their manager Natasha Cartwright, and their parent support Angela Williams, who were with them throughout the three days. A very special thank you to Janelle Trounson for joining them on the trip as an umpire. Lastly, they couldn't have done it without the support of the parents and the community.

West Coast Secondary School Field Hockey 25th July
A great day for Hockey in Westport. A boy's team and a girl's team made up of players from Westland High School, Greymouth High School & JPII faced off against the Buller team. The Girls won 3-0 and the boys had a draw. Thanks to Buller High School for hosting and Jack O’Connor for the refereeing. Congratulations to all the players for their hard work and great sportsmanship!

West Coast Secondary School Senior Volleyball 26th July
What a great start to the third term for Westland high school with all the sporting action! Our school had two girls' teams and a boys' team representing us in the West Coast Secondary School Volleyball tournament that was hosted by Buller High School in Westport. The competition was intense, but it was a great experience for all players to learn and grow throughout the day. There were six teams in the girls' competition as well as six teams in the boys' competition. We would like to thank Maddy Crawford for managing the tournament. It was great to see some volleyball players step up and do the umpiring in the tournament. A special thank you goes out to Amanda Bisdee for her help in driving the school van and managing the team.

West Coast Secondary School Senior Netball 3rd August
What a great day for netball! WHS hosted the West Coast Secondary School Netball tournament and it was a thrilling competition. Six schools from across the West Coast came together to compete for the trophy. We are proud to announce that our very own Westland High School team emerged victorious in the end. They played an amazing game against South Westland Area School in the Final and came away with a well-deserved win. We also want to take a moment to thank our netball umpires who did an excellent job throughout the day. Their dedication and hard work made the tournament run smoothly. Congratulations to all the teams who participated and especially to our champions, Westland High School!
